The Cardinals make home run history in their wild comeback win
The Cardinals broke out the big sticks again Tuesday night, tying an NL record and setting an MLB mark in their 9-7 win over the Pirates.
Down to their last strike and trailing 6-5 in the ninth inning, the Cardinals tied the game on a solo shot by pinch hitter Matt Carpenter. It was St. Louis’ 15th pinch-hit homer of the season -- a new major-league record.

And then Randal Grichuk delivered a two-run blast before Jhonny Peralta got into the action with a solo homer.

In all, the Cardinals homered five times in the win -- Yadier Molina did it in grand style -- to tie an NL record by homering in 25 consecutive games. All nine of their runs on Tuesday scored on homers. Not surprisingly, St. Louis leads the NL with 201 homers this season. Only the Orioles (218) have gone deep more often.
