The San Francisco Giants react to the controversial call that could cost them a wild card
The Giants took care of business on Thursday night, beating the Rockies to maintain their one-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for the second NL wild card.
However, that lead might have grown to two games if not for a blown call in the Cardinals’ walk-off win over the Reds. Cincinnati manager Bryan Price was livid after the loss and even mentioned how unfortunate it could prove for San Francisco.
A two-game lead with three games to play would be a lot more comfortable than a one-game lead, but the Giants don’t seem too concerned. From MLB.com:
"These things happen," Hunter Pence said. "It was a good hit [by Molina]. I don't really totally understand the issue. They [the Cardinals] won the game. It's nothing to be concerned about. The closeness [of the wild card competition] is pretty fun."
"Obviously in this situation you hate to hear that," Bruce Bochy said. "I guess there were two outs, too, which is a big difference. I don't know what's going to happen. You hate to see that happen in these games because they're all so critical and important. It's a tough break for the Reds and a tough break for us because obviously [we're] battling to get there."
"We're just focused on our game and the things we can control," GM Bobby Evans wrote in a text message.
The Giants finish the season with a three-game homestand against the rival Dodgers, while the Cardinals host the Pirates for three. And the Mets, who currently have a one-game lead over San Francisco for the first wild card, play at Philadelphia. Stay tuned.
