Tim Lincecum gives update on rehab, wants to appreciate fans

Nearly a month after his season-ending hip surgery, Tim Lincecum gave an update to reporters on his condition before the Giants game on Tuesday.

"Good," Lincecum said, per CSN Bay Area, when asked how the recovery process has been going so far. "Everything is on track. And it's obviously tedious but I think that's what rehab is. But it's a good routine I got going and the people taking care of me are really good. [Dr. Marc] Philippon's team is exceptional. I feel like I'm in really good hands. They're pretty good forward thinkers, you know?"

Lincecum had an arthroscopic procedure performed on his left hip on Sept. 3 after the two-time Cy Young winner discovered that he had degenerative hips.

While the 31-year-old righty admits the process has been frustrating for him, he remains optimistic about the future and is delighted to be back with his teammates for their home stand.

"I think that's what's different about the situation is it wasn't like an injury that I caused. It was just kind of a structural issue I had going on that kind of came on as a bigger issue just because I've been pitching on it so long," Lincecum said.

"With that I've just been trying to work ahead and think about the future and obviously be in the moment at the same time. Being here right now with the team is pretty special for me, seeing all the guys especially, it's coming down to the wire and you don't know what's going to happen. It's good to see these guys and see them smile and it's definitely fun 'cause I get to smile too."

As he rehabs from surgery, Lincecum may be preparing to return to a team other than the Giants, for whom he has played his entire nine-year career, as his contract will expire after the season ends and he will enter free agency.

With that prospect in mind, Lincecum hopes he'll have the opportunity to thank the fans for their support over the years.

"I hope something happens. Obviously I would like to show my appreciation one way or another just because they've been with me day in and day out," he said. "These fans don't get paid to be here. It's on the other side. It's completely selfless, and to be able to kind of give yourself in that way I understand as a fan of sports is pretty special and I can definitely relate to it."
