Two young Mariners named to Futures Game roster
Two of the Seattle Mariners' most promising young prospects were named to the All-Star Futures Game roster on Thursday.
They'll take part in the game, scheduled for Sunday, July 12 at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park ahead of MLB's All-Star Week festivities.
As Greg Johns of MLB.com detailed, Double-A right-hander Edwin Diaz, 21, and Triple-A shortstop Ketel Marte will both suit up for the World Team in the exhibition game.
Marte broke his thumb in late May, throwing a wrench in any potential plans to bring him up to the Mariners anytime soon (which was discussed). Before his injury, Marte was hitting a robust .343/.394/.434 in 51 games with Triple-A Tacoma. Johns notes that Marte is currently working out at the M's Spring Training facility in hopes of being deemed healthy enough to play in the game.
As for Diaz, he went 4-4 with a 3.36 ERA in 14 games spread across Single-A and Double-A this season.
In more Mariners-related news, Ken Griffey, Sr. will manage the U.S. team in the Futures Game.
