Published Nov. 15, 2016 2:47 p.m. ET

Before the Boston Red Sox played their final regular season game of the season on Sunday and David Ortiz the last regular season game of his career, the 40-year-old addressed the packed house at Fenway Park to give thanks and say farewell.

Ortiz stood alongside his father and fought back tears when he remembered his mother Angela who died in a car crash in 2002.

Several of Ortiz's former teammates were on hand for the special ceremony, including Manny Ramirez and Pedro Martinez, when the team revealed that it would retire Ortiz's number 34 next season. Here's the speech:

Ortiz is having a farewell season for the ages with 38 home runs, 48 doubles, 127 RBI and a .315 batting average. The AL East champion Red Sox will host the Cleveland Indians in their ALDS series beginning on Thursday.
