WATCH: Tigers catch Lorenzo Cain in crazy rundown for rare 1-3-6-1-4 putout
Baseball is a funny game. And it has its share of funny plays to go along with it.
Just like this one, which happened during Sunday's Tigers-Royals game at Comerica Park.
Royals speedster Lorenzo Cain had a huge lead at first when Tigers starter Alfredo Simon tried to catch him off guard with a throw to first baseman Victor Martinez, sparking a rundown. After a little back-and-forth, Simon got the ball back and accidentally threw it off of Cain's back, but second baseman Andrew Romine reacted quickly to tag out Cain for the rare 1-3-6-1-4 putout.
Check it out:
"It's funny," Machado said. "It's not something that happens often. It happens once in a while -- maybe never," Machado said of the play (via MLB.com). "Normally, if you hit a guy, the ball kind of dies. Romine told me that the ball jumped, and he got it and touched the guy."
Unfortunatley for the Tigers, the play wouldn't factor in to the final score, as the Royals went on to win 10-3.
