With child battling leukemia, Aviles placed on family medical list
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians have placed infielder Mike Aviles on the family medical emergency list for the second time this season.
Aviles' 4-year-old daughter, Adriana, was diagnosed with leukemia in May and has been undergoing treatment at Cleveland Clinic. Aviles was at the hospital with his daughter Friday before arriving at Progressive Field, and he then left to return to the hospital before the start of that night's game against Oakland. On Saturday, he called manager Terry Francona to say, "I need to be there."
"This will allow Mike to be with his family," Francona said.
Aviles was originally on the list from May 8-14 and was moved to the restricted list from May 15-17 before returning to the Indians.
Several Cleveland players, coaches and front office employees, including owner Paul Dolan, shaved their heads in support of Aviles' family.
A player can be on the family emergency list for 3-7 days. Aviles is batting .250 with four home runs and nine RBIs in 54 games.
Infielder Jose Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Columbus. He began the season as Cleveland's starting shortstop but batted .180 in 46 games and was sent down June 7.
