Yoenis Cespedes agrees to a massive deal to return to the Mets
The New York Mets have agreed to a four-year, $110 million deal with free-agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, FOX’s Ken Rosenthal reports.
It is a record-breaking deal for the Mets and puts Cespedes in some pretty exclusive company in terms of major-league salaries:
Cespedes, 31, recently opted out of the final two years of the three-year, $75 million contract he signed last offseason with the Mets.
With Cespedes back in the mix, New York will return an outfield of Cespedes in left, Curtis Granderon in center and Jay Bruce in right. However, the Mets could explore a trade for Granderson or Bruce because they have solid outfield depth with Michael Conforto and Juan Lagares.
In 132 games this past season, Cespedes hit .280/.354/.530 with 31 homers, 25 doubles and 86 RBI. Acquired from the Tigers on July 31, 2015, Cespedes helped lead the Mets to the World Series two seasons ago.
As others, starting with @martinonyc, have noted, Cespedes gets full no-trade protection in deal, which is pending a physical.
