Carlos Sainz says Palmer collision was a racing incident
Carlos Sainz says his collision with the Renault of Jolyon Palmer in Abu Dhabi was just a bad conclusion to a what had already been a frustrating weekend for Toro Rosso.
The Italian team did little running in practice after it had to address an issue that was causing rim failures, and Sainz’s race was spoiled when he was pit from behind by Palmer, resulting in gearbox damage. Palmer subsequently received a time penalty.
“It was a bit of a shame,” said Sainz. “I won’t say the collision was frustrating, because it’s been a frustrating weekend for the whole team in general, and we didn’t want it to finish like that.
“We had a lot of difficulties this weekend, but still we were managing to do a very good race. We recovered from 21st to 13th which, without doing free practice, without doing long runs, is not easy. It was just a race incident. I was hit from behind when the comeback was completed for P13, and we were ahead of the Renault.
“It’s a shame, but that’s racing. They put a five-second penalty on Jolyon, so it’s finished there. In general, it was frustrating.”
