F1 support division changes name from GP2 Series to FIA Formula 2

The GP2 Series has been re-branded as FIA Formula 2 with immediate effect, the World Motor Sport Council has confirmed.

The FIA announced the return of the F2 name some time ago, in an initiative supported by Jean Todt. While it always seemed likely that the name would be adopted by GP2 rather than a new standalone series, it took some negotiation for the deal to be finalized.

The 2017 calendar includes the expected F1 support events, plus a race away from F1 at Jerez in October.

The FIA announced Thursday: “The World Motor Sport Council approved the creation of the FIA Formula 2 Championship for 2017 onwards. The FIA reached an agreement with the Formula One Group regarding the transition of the GP2 Series to FIA Formula 2, and the series will support the FIA Formula One World Championship in all but one of the dates.”

The original European F2 Championship ran from 1967 to 1984, before it was replaced by F3000, which was in turn replaced by GP2 in 2005.

The F2 name was revived by the FIA between 2008 and 2012, but the series struggled to top drivers in the face of strong competition from GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5.

“Completing this process with Formula One Group and bringing Formula 2 to life is a very important step," said Todt. "The series will provide a fantastic opportunity for junior drivers who are looking to reach the ultimate goal of Formula 1.

“In recent years we have developed a hugely successful programme of FIA Formula 4 championships in 12 countries around the world and the FIA F3 European Championship has become very strong and competitive. Today’s announcement further strengthens this program."

“Junior categories and especially the upcoming F2 Championship are strategic activities for the Formula One Group," said F1 boss Chase Carey. “We are delighted to strengthen them through this agreement with the FIA.”
