IndyCar Shows Its Lighter Side In New 'Blooper Reel'

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

IndyCar is celebrating the personalities of its drivers by releasing a new blooper reel featuring the light-hearted moments of 2016’s season. Watch it here.

IndyCar racing can be very serious, but there are plenty of moments when the drivers won’t be. The organization is celebrating those less serious clips this weekend by releasing a compilation of them it’s calling the series “blooper reel.”

It’s not a “blooper reel” per se, as it’s not just screw-ups; it takes clips from pretty much every major off-track activity in 2016, including Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves and Josef Newgarden being on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior and James Hinchcliffe’s current run on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

But there are some genuine mistakes in there as well as a few other hilarious moments.

Highlights include Juan Pablo Montoya grossly overestimating the schedule while recording a pre-race promo, Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi’s deadpan assessment of his situation while attending Space Camp, and Hinchcliffe trying to shake some sense into Castroneves before they taped their episode of ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud.

While parts of this video are funnier than others, it’s fun to see the drivers of the IndyCar series at their least serious. The league is full of great personalities and those personalities aren’t always on full display when we see them preparing for or immediately after a race.

You also have to hand it to IndyCar for poking fun at its own quirks over the season, namely the way all the drivers were mentioning series title sponsor Verizon after the 2016 Grand Prix at the Glen. That was something fans and critics were laughing about, so it’s good to see that the league can have a sense of humor about it too.

With five-plus months until the 2017 IndyCar season, videos like this blooper reel are the best way that the league will be able to keep fans intrigued until the next race. This compilation of moments is a fun start, and hopefully there will be many more such digital exclusives on the way through the offseason.
