Josef Newgarden, Helio Castroneves Lead New Film On Data Acquisition

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

New IndyCar teammates Josef Newgarden and Helio Castroneves are among the drivers explaining data acquisition in a fresh film from SAFEisFAST.com.

Josef Newgarden and Helio Castroneves are now IndyCar teammates for Team Penske, but they’re also coming together to teach aspiring race car drivers about data acquisition in the latest video from SAFEisFAST.com.

In “Data Acquisition: Is The Driver Just Another Sensor?” several pro racers discuss the process of acquiring data on-track, the value of having that information for their race teams and how the role the driver plays in that aspect has evolved along with racing technology.

Even if you don’t know anything about the technical parts of motorsports, it’s informative and entertaining to watch the charismatic Newgarden and Castroneves talk about the tools of their trade, and they’re not the only ones.

Aside from Newgarden and Castroneves, other participants include Formula One veteran (and enemy of The Stig) Rubens Barrichello and newly minted Formula Three champion Lance Stroll, so this is a pretty great lineup for the latest SAFEisFAST feature.

Watch the film below to learn more about data acquisition and its role in professional racing:

Several IndyCar stars have participated in a number of SAFEisFAST initiatives, including 2016 title runner-up Will Power and Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi, but “Data Acquisition” might be one of the best yet if only because you can’t possibly go wrong with Newgarden and Castroneves – even when they’re talking about a subject as dry as the gathering and processing of numerical data.

Fans will have to wait and see if Newgarden and Castroneves actually team up when the 2017 IndyCar season begins next March. The former departed Ed Carpenter Racing for Penske in a widely expected move, while Castroneves hasn’t officially been confirmed to return though repeated mentions of him seem to indicate a high probability that he will.

Ironically, Newgarden was driving Castroneves’s No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet in the Gateway Motorsports Park tire test earlier this month.
