Lewis Hamilton joins Schumacher and Prost as he reaches 50 GP wins
Lewis Hamilton became only the third man in history to reach 50 Grand Prix wins by logging his fourth success in Austin after a perfect afternoon for the World Champion.
Hamilton made a good start and was never headed as joined Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher in passing the half-century mark.
“I had completely forgotten that it was going to be the 50th,” he said. “It’s been a long time coming. Once again, and I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ve been here for 10 years, I’ve had lots of ups and downs and lots of great opportunities to work with some incredibly gifted people who have helped me get here today. Then my family as well without whom I wouldn’t be here today. It’s kind of very surreal, for sure. I can’t believe that there are only three of us [above 50] but hopefully onto bigger and better things.
“I’ve generally been relaxed all weekend. I knew that the start was going to go well so that’s the first time in the whole year that I’ve known that that’s going to go well. Great work done by the guys and great work done in the factory last week and it worked perfectly today.”
Hamilton said he wasn’t worried about the fact that he could win the remaining three races and still not be champion if Rosberg keeps finishing on the podium.
“Honestly, I just focus on doing the best job I can. Honestly today, beyond doing the job... I felt comfortable doing the job, I was just the whole race concerned the car was not going to make it so right, I’ve been told the line, I was just in fear of the same thing, the same feeling, the sound that I heard in Malaysia, so I was grateful that the car made it across the line and I have a lot more confidence in his reliability. It’s going well for him. I’ve just got to continue to do my job and hope for the best.”
