Sebastian Vettel blasts F1 for lack of leadership

Sebastian Vettel has criticized Formula One's new elimination qualifying system, suggesting the sport lacks leadership.

When asked if F1 was "broken" -- as some observers have suggested -- Vettel cited his frustration in much of the same way that fellow world champion Fernando Alonso did on Thursday.

"I don't think it's broken," Vettel said. "In terms of the show, I think F1 is doing fine. In the background, I think the decisions lately and so on it is fair to say that it is lacking leadership. I think it's a little bit chaotic if a couple of weeks before the season you start to re-invent certain rules and the formats of qualifying as has been discussed in the last couple of weeks.

"I'm personally not a fan of [the new] qualifying, and speaking on behalf of all the drivers, no driver is, we don't get what's wrong with the old qualifying, and why to change it."

Vettel also voiced his concern about leaders making decisions that might ruin the integrity of F1.

"I think it's important for the sport to remain a sport so that in the end the fastest driver comes out on top," Vettel added. "That has been the DNA for F1 forever, as far as I can remember, and that's the DNA of the sport, starting from karting.

"Trying to change that in such an extreme manner I think is the wrong way to go, and creates chaos, creates criticism among us the drivers, amongst the fans. In that regard, it's fair to say it lacks leadership."
