Sergio Perez frustrated by Kvyat collision damage in Austin

Published Nov. 15, 2016 1:56 p.m. ET

Sergio Perez says his life was made difficult in the US GP due to aero damage at the rear of his car caused by the first lap contact with the Toro Rosso of Dany Kvyat.

Perez spun and lost ground after the incident but, despite the car’s performance being hampered, he recovered to eighth, scoring crucial points in Force India’s battle with Williams.

“I’m happy given the circumstances we had,” he said. “Obviously Kvyat came out of control and hit me on the rear, and made me spin off. From then on it was a very difficult race, and I could not come back and do the normal race because I had quite a damaged rear. Given that the wind was picking up it was very difficult just to maintain the car on track. All-in-all, at the end of the day, it ended up being not such a bad day.

“All the weekend I’ve driven the car with some damage, yesterday in qualifying I had some damage, today in the race also some damage, but I think today was even more extreme than what I had yesterday. Coming away with eighth place, I think we made the most out of a difficult race.”

Kvyat was given a 10-second time penalty for causing the collision.
