Happy 78th birthday to NASCAR Hall of Famer Cale Yarborough
Happy 78th birthday to NASCAR Hall of Fame member and three-time Premier Series champion Cale Yarborough.
A native of Timmonsville, S.C., Yarborough is one of the toughest NASCAR racers of all-time, and one of the toughest to beat.
Driving for Junior Johnson, Yarborough won three consecutive Premier Series championships from 1976-78, becoming the first driver to win three in a row. Since then, the only other driver to win three or more consecutive titles in a row was Jimmie Johnson, who won five straight from 2006-10.
Yarborough won 83 Premier Series races in his 31-year career, which ranks sixth all-time. And he’s fourth all-time with 69 poles.
On top of that, Yarborough won the Daytona 500 four times (1968, ’77, ’83-84) and was named to NASCAR’s “50 Greatest Drivers” list in 1998.
