Truex broke the magically 200 mile per hour barrier during the session, busting off a best lap of 201.545 mph in the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota.
Each of the three manufacturers in NASCAR was represented in the top three, with six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson second at 201.134 mph in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
Joey Logano, the June Michigan winner, was third in a Team Penske Ford, followed by Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson.
The only incident in practice came with 12 minutes left when Jeffrey Earnhardt tagged the Turn 2 wall in the No. 32 Go Fas Racing Ford. "I got down in the corner and the car just went straight," said Earnhardt, who will have to go to a backup car for the race.
Friday's 85-minute session was the only practice for the Cup cars prior to qualifying, which is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. ET.
On Saturday, there will be two additional round of practice, the first at 8:30 a.m. ET, with Happy Hour scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
