Practice 2 results: Kevin Harvick fastest championship contender
Kyle Larson led Saturday’s rain-shortened morning practice session in advance of the season-ending Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Larson had a best lap of 176.010 miles per hour at the 1.5-mile South Florida oval in his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet.
The practice was cut short after 35 minutes because of rain.
Second-fastest was defending series champion and Homestead winner Kevin Harvick, who ran 175.194 mph in the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet. Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Joey Logano completed the top five.
Sunday’s race will determine the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. Four drivers are in title contention: Martin Truex Jr., Harvick, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch. Whichever one of the four drivers has the best finish in the race wins the title. Busch was ninth in practice, Gordon 15th and Truex 19th.
The final Happy Hour practice is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, weather permitting.
Casey Mears spun out about eight minutes into the session, but he kept the Germain Racing Chevrolet off the wall. Later in the session, AJ Allmendinger pancaked the wall in his JTG Daugherty Racing Chevy.
