Rookie William Byron is the big story in Camping World Truck Series

We have a truck race tonight at Bristol Motor Speedway. Obviously the big story this year in that series has to be rookie contender William Byron who has already won five races this year. I get a lot of questions asked of me about how in the heck is this kid so good?

One of the biggest positives any driver can have is the equipment and resources to match your ability. A lot of times we see drivers who show flashes of talent but don't have the equipment to back them up.

That certainly isn't the case with William as he is being mentored and developed by Kyle Busch. Kyle has built an organization that simply wins.

This is an organization that isn't to be taken lightly and to his credit, William is maximizing the opportunity that he has been given. This organization races identical to Joe Gibbs Racing. Now by that I mean they give you the best equipment, the best people, the best data and resources. Then it is up to you, the driver to take advantage of it.

Right now this young man is not only showing he has a feel for something, but he has a mind-set to go along with it. The kid doesn't let himself get rattled through his learning curve. The kid is just plan fun to watch especially when you think about the fact that he was an unproven and unknown talent.

We see many drivers on the Saturday night tracks or racing Legend cars who, once they move up in their careers, simply stall out. That's not the case with this young man.

I like to use the analogy that once they stuffed him down in that Toyota truck, he was like a duck on a pond. Underneath the water his little feet are just going 900 miles a minute, but on the surface he just glides along calm, cool and collected.

You just can't rattle the kid and I think that is what is really impressive. Just think about all the things tugging on him. He's learning how to handle the tracks, the sponsors, the fans and he's simply taking it all in stride.

He's got his family behind him off the track and then he has the full support and resources at his fingertips that Kyle Busch has made available to him. Quite honestly, it looks to me like they are molding another Erik Jones or Kyle Busch and that is really saying something.
