Jimmie Johnson was fastest in Friday's opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice for the Crown Royal 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Johnson ran a lap of 184.185 miles per hour around the 2.5-mile track.

But, of course, the biggest story of the session was Jeff Gordon turning his first laps in the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at the Brickyard and Pocono Raceway.

Gordon recorded the ninth-fastest time at 179.376 mph as he dealt with an overall tight race car throughout the session.

Tony Stewart, preparing for his final race at Indy, laid down the eighth-fastest time at 179.655 mph.

Kyle Busch, the defending Brickyard winner, ran into some trouble after Patrick Carpentier came down on Busch at the entrance of Turn 2, causing him to spin with 22 minutes remaining in the session.

Busch, driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, received minimal right-side damage after contact with Carpentier's No. 32 Go Fas Racing Ford, as he was able to avoid hitting the inside wall.

After the incident, Carpentier went over to Busch's garage stall to apologize.

"I haven't been in the car (on an oval) in five years, so things are happening pretty fast," Carpentier told NBC pit reporter Mike Massaro.

Denny Hamlin (182.185 mph), Casey Mears (180.346 mph), Kevin Harvick (179.845 mph) and Ryan Newman (179.784 mph) rounded out the top five.
