Sprint Cup Practice 1 results for Hollywood Casino 400
Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch led Friday’s lone round of practice for the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.
Busch wheeled his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to a best lap of 194.595 miles per hour around the 1.5-mile Kansas track. That speed was particularly impressive since he missed the first 30 minutes of NASCAR practice for a swerving penalty from last week’s race at Charlotte.
Second-fast was Busch’s older brother, Kurt, who ran 194.119 mph in the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet. Kyle’s JGR teammate Carl Edwards was third, followed by the Hendrick Motorsports Chevys of Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott.
The Hollywood Casino 400 is the second of three races in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Round of 12. After next week’s race at Talladega Superspeedway, only the top eight drivers in points will advance to the semifinal round of the Chase.
A win in any of the three races of this round automatically advances the winner to the next round. The only driver locked in already is Jimmie Johnson, who won at Charlotte Motor Speedway last Sunday and was eighth fast in practice today at Kansas.
Today’s practice was the first on-track activity for the Cup teams this weekend.
Qualifying is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. ET this evening, with two rounds of practice on Saturday. The first takes place at 11 a.m., with the final Happy Hour round at 1:30 p.m.
