Sprint Cup qualifying cancelled at Chicagoland for third year in a row

Published Sep. 16, 2016 2:29 p.m. ET

Persistent rain at Chicagoland Speedway Friday afternoon has resulted in the cancellation of NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying for Sunday's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400.

As a result, the field for the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup will be set per the NASCAR rulebook, which puts the Chase drivers up front.

Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch will start from the pole in the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, flanked by the No. 2 Team Penske Ford of Brad Keselowski. Busch's teammate, Denny Hamlin, will be on the inside of Row 2, next to 2014 series champ Kevin Harvick in the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.

This is the third year in a row that weather has resulted in the cancellation of qualifying of the Chicagoland Cup race.

The good news is that the forecast looks much better for Sunday, with Weather.com calling for just a 10 percent chance of rain.
