X-rays 'fine' on Allmendinger's thumb, but team to skip Indy testing
Even though NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver AJ Allmendinger said X-rays came back "fine" for his injured thumb, his No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing team will skip this week's testing session at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
According to crew chief Randall Burnett, skipping the Indy test will give the team time to "regroup" and focus on building race cars after a rough stretch.
Allmendinger injured his thumb during a wreck in last Saturday night's Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway.
He left the track with his left thumb in a splint after a visit to the infield care center and said he planned to have it X-rayed.
"I didn't get my hand off the steering wheel. I got it jammed in the steering wheel pretty bad," he said then. "It just slammed in and caught the steering wheel.
"Fortunately, it moved around enough I don't think anything is broken in there, but I'll get it X-rayed to see what we got. A lot of hurt ego right now more than my thumb hurts."
Fortunately, the X-rays came back negative and Allmendinger will be ready to go for this Sunday's Sprint Cup race at New Hampshire.
He just won't be participating in the two-day test at Indy after crashing twice at Kentucky, where he finished 36th. He has now wrecked out of two of the last four races, falling to 20th in the points standings in the process.
The drivers slated to participate in the two-day Indy test this Tuesday and Wednesday are Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Paul Menard, Brian Scott, Chris Buescher, Trevor Bayne, Kyle Larson, Matt Kenseth and Martin Truex Jr.
On-track activities for the test are scheduled for between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET daily.
