Charlotte Hornets: Aaron Harrison and Christian Wood are Proving Themselves

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

With their recent assignment to the Greensboro Swarm, Aaron Harrison and Christian Wood have continued to prove themselves to the Charlotte Hornets.

As the two youngest players on the Charlotte Hornets‘ roster, Aaron Harrison and Christian Wood are the two prospects that the team mostly wants to develop for the future. While they won’t get much playing time at the NBA level just yet, they have the chance to develop in the D-League with the Greensboro Swarm. In their inaugural season, the Hornets’ affiliate is already paying dividends.

By having an NBA Developmental league affiliate, Charlotte now has somewhere to send their young guys to continue their growth and get consistent playing time. Two players making the most of the situation are Harrison and Wood. They recently played on assignment to Greensboro and played stellar in their outings.

With their performances, each of them proved something to the Hornets’ franchise and themselves. They showcased their skills and talent while proving that Charlotte made the right call by betting on these two young prospects. Aaron and Christian haven’t yet made their impact  at the NBA level but if they continue to play well in the D-League, their time could be right around the corner.

More from Swarm and Sting

In four games with the Greensboro Swarm, Aaron Harrison has averaged 24.8 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game, and 2.3 steals per game. He is also shooting 44.1% from the field and 35.7% from the three-point line. He even recorded one double-double during the four-game stint.

Christian Wood only played two games with the Swarm while on assignment but in those two games, he averaged 21.5 points per game, 12.0 rebounds per game, and 2.0 blocks per game. In the two matches, he had two double-double performances.

Obviously, the D-League isn’t the NBA but there is high-level talent and numerous players have developed there before making an impact with their current teams. If Harrison and Wood are ever going to be productive rotation players, and possibly more, with the Charlotte Hornets, it is essential for them to get regular minutes in Greensboro.

Here are some Highlight of Aaron Harrison’s 23-point Game:

While their stats may be overlooked by many, these big games give Aaron and Christian confidence and momentum. These assignments aren’t only good for the players, the Swarm also benefit from them. After losing their first five games in the D-League this season, Aaron Harrison has helped the team win back to back games including their first ever victory.

Here are some Highlights of Christian Wood’s 20-10 Double-Double:

From what we’ve seen of Harrison in the summer league, preseason, and D-League play, he is a combo guard with loads of raw talent. It is clear that he has a score first mentality and his play over the past few games shows that he has improved on his outside shooting. On the other hand, Christian is another raw talent but as a big man, his athleticism leads him to score inside and grab plenty of boards.

Aaron Harrison and Christian Wood still have a long way to go before they become consistent contributors at the NBA level for the Charlotte Hornets but in the meantime, they are improving their games in the D-League. The Greensboro Swarm is giving the organization an opportunity to take a closer look at their young prospects in game action and it is clear that both of these players have the talent that it takes to make it in the NBA. Their dominance of the D-League is a positive sign going forward and it is only a matter of time before they get their shot under Steve Clifford.
