Cleveland Cavaliers: A Kevin Love Trade Is Possible, But Not Expected
After going 7-8 during the month of January, it seems a trade is inevitable moving forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers. All-Star forward Kevin Love’s name has been thrown around.
Ever since joining the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, Kevin Love’s name has been prominent in trade rumors throughout the NBA. Whether it was a potential deal with the Boston Celtics, or a swap for Sacramento Kings big-man DeMarcus Cousins, K-Love’s name has been a hot commodity in the rumor mill for the better part of the last three seasons.
Despite all of these rumors, Love is still a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his third season with the Cavaliers, the 28-year-old has averaged 19.9 points and 11 rebounds en-route to his first All-Star appearance since the 2013-14 campaign.
Even though Love is having his best season as a Cavalier, his name has yet again been thrown in to trade talks. The most recent rumor to creep it’s way to the surface is a potential swap for New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony.
Are any of these rumors true?
The Cavaliers reportedly turned down a proposed Anthony-for-Love swap, but it doesn’t stop there. According to Joe Vardon of cleveland.com, the Cavaliers would be willing to trade Love if the price was right.
But while the Cavs are not shopping Love, sources said, the right deal could pry him out of Cleveland.
If the Cavaliers were to trade Love, it would be to compete with the Golden State Warriors in a potential NBA Finals rematch. With former MVP Kevin Durant as the Warriors newest weapon, the Cavaliers could look to bring in a new play that matches up well against Durant. The Warriors could potentially give Love a hard time is the opportunity presents itself.

Although a mismatch is possible against the Warriors, both the Cavaliers and Kevin Love don’t expect a trade to happen. According to Vardon, it is highly unlikely he’s moved by the Feb. 23 trade deadline.
“I expect to be here for a long time,” Love said Friday, when asked if he expected a trade, per Vardon.

How to Improve for Cleveland
Although a trade involving Love is unlikely, the Cavaliers are looking to acquire more talent. The team held a free-agent tryout Wednesday for the likes of Mario Chalmers, Kirk Hinrich, Lance Stephenson, and Jordan Farmar.
Out of all the players, Farmar impressed the most. If he were brought in, it wouldn’t be for the long-term; instead, a 10-day contract would be expected.
Aside from the free-agent workout, Cavaliers general manager David Griffin intends to be busy in the trade market before the deadline. He hopes to make an impactful trade after the All-Star break.
It is clear the Cavaliers need to acquire more talent. Whether it is from trade or a free agent signing, one thing is expected: Kevin Love will be a Cavalier for the remainder of the season.
