Could Rudy Gay play more power forward next year?

Published Jun. 5, 2015 2:04 p.m. ET

As the NBA goes smaller and smaller, plenty of small forwards are shifting over to become either full-time or part-time 4s. We've seen LeBron James play more power forward as his career has progressed, though he's gotten away from that since returning to Cleveland. Same with Carmelo Anthony.

The Warriors are winning with Draymond Green at the 4. There are countless more examples. Today's NBA is about stretching the floor. So, how can the Kings adapt to that? How about putting Rudy Gay at power forward?

Jason Wise has some thoughts on that at NBA.com:

Gay averaged 21.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season. Though he is historically a 3, he's played his fair share of 4 throughout his career.

Kings star forward Rudy Gay joined SiriusXM NBA Radio on Thursday to talk Kings basketball, his offseason, Coach Karl and more.

“He’s old-fashioned but he brings a new way of playing,” said Gay when asked about George Karl’s addition to the squad. "It’s fun so we are all-in on it.”

Rudy - who has shined in Sacramento - posted career numbers last season, tallying 21.1 points, 3.7 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game.

According to Rudy, he and George have kept in close contact this summer, with the Hall of Fame coach offering his wisdom and sharing that potentially Rudy could see some time at power forward next season.

“I’m trying to learn him as much as possible,” said Gay when asked about his discussions with his Coach. "He’s talked to me about playing more at the four.”
