Cousins scores 56 in all-time performance, Kings waste it in 2OT

While much of the country slept late Monday night, DeMarcus was wide awake in Sacramento. VERY wide awake.

But in the end, what may have been a nightmare foul call ended his historic night early, and doomed his Kings in double overtime.

Cousins scored a career-high 56 points, matching the franchise record set by Oscar Robertson in 1964 and setting a new high mark for the NBA this season. But it wasn’t just the 56 points. Look at these numbers:

Yup, the Kings wasted Cousins’ career night (and Rajon Rondo's 20 assists, to boot). And what’s more, it was a 3-pointer by backup Hornets guard Troy Daniels with 9 seconds to play that did it. To put that into some perspective:

The world certainly took notice as the big night unfolded.

Then there was that sixth foul -- an offensive foul called as Cousins pulled down a rebound and put it back in for an apparent and-one. The Kings led 126-124 with 3:30 to play in the second overtime when the call was made.

And when the game was over, the attention quickly shifted to the ineptitude of the rest of the Kings, including just how historically bad they were.

For his part, Cousins played the good teammate after the game.

"It was a tough loss. I was just sitting here (in the locker room) thinking how a lot of the plays early on could have changed the game," Cousins told the media after the game. "But I think through all of the mistakes, we all left it on the floor. You hate to lose games like this."
