Davidson won't retire Steph Curry's jersey number until he graduates

There are certain strings even a reigning MVP can't pull.

Davidson retires only the jerseys of players who graduated, and Curry, who left school a year early in 2009 to enter the NBA draft, has not completed his degree requirements, according to ESPN. Until that happens, the school will not retire Curry's jersey or induct him into their Hall of Fame.

"I knew what I signed up for when I went to Davidson," Curry told ESPN. "I made a promise to coach [Bob] McKillop and my family that when I left school back in '09 that that would be accomplished -- and it will be soon. Hopefully sooner than later."

Davidson doesn't offer summer classes, though it's not like Curry could even attend them with the deep playoff runs the Warriors will probably be enjoying over the new few years. Curry claims he just has to finish a couple more classes to be eligible to graduate and that he's "researched a plan of attack of how to get it done."

McKillip, Curry's former coach, says Curry is "the biggest catalyst for Davidson basketball that Davidson College has ever had." But still, in spite of that, Davidson hasn't decided to make an except and recognize Curry's time with the school yet, according to Davidson athletic director Jim Murphy.

There's still a glimmer of hope for Curry that Davidson would make an exception for him, given his current stature. But that might be asking for too much.

"The policy itself speaks a lot to what Davidson is all about. It'd be an interesting discussion, but it hasn't been started yet," Murray said.
