DeMarcus Cousins 'will kidnap' Rondo to keep him with Kings
If Rajon Rondo thinks he’ll leave the Sacramento Kings without incident after this season, he better steer clear of DeMarcus Cousins.
It seemed like a worthwhile gamble for the Kings to take a flier on Rondo, even after his tumultuous and brief stay with the Dallas Mavericks following a midseason trade from the Boston Celtics last December. But signing the dynamic point guard to a one-year, $9.5 million deal — while a minor investment that is paying huge dividends — has now presented the Kings with quite the conundrum, as Rondo is playing far better than many expected.
Rondo is averaging 12.9 points per game, leads the NBA in assists (10.7) and is pulling down a career-high 7.1 rebounds per game. While Rondo’s play hasn’t necessarily translated into a lot of winning for the Kings (7-12), he certainly has made the team a much more talented one.
And if Rondo believes he’ll skip out of Sac-Town and sign elsewhere for big bucks? Cousins isn’t about to allow it without putting up a fight. Or something perhaps even more drastic.
“He ain’t going nowhere,” Cousins told Yahoo Sports, via Pro Basketball Talk. “I will kidnap him myself.”
Rondo didn’t discount continuing on as a teammate of Cousins — who he called the “best big man in the game” over the past three seasons — for many years in the future.
“In the words of K.G., ‘Anything is possible,’” he said.
Cousins made it clear that he is developing a camaraderie and chemistry with Rondo, both on and off the court.
“The way we compete and the type of competitors we are, it’s hard for us not to get along,” he said of Rondo. “We damn near think alike all the time. I’m soaking in all I can. He’s a champion. I basically look up to him.
Rondo made some intriguing comments earlier this season regarding his relationship with Kings head coach George Karl. Although he did say he was joking afterward. Should Karl, Rondo and Cousins get on the same page — a “powerful” two-hour meeting recently may help in that — the Kings could become a real dangerous team.
