Did Dallas want to draft a point guard instead of Justin Anderson?

Sometimes in the NBA Draft, things don't pan out exactly as planned.

Based on what Dirk Nowitzki told reporters after the draft, that was the case for the Dallas Mavericks with the 21st selection. The Mavericks ended up drafting Virginia swingman Justin Anderson with that choice.

Nowitzki tends to be a straight-shooter with the media, and here's what he told Michael Florek of the Dallas Morning News:

Washington took Notre Dame point guard Jerian Grant 19th overall. Then Toronto took Utah point guard Delon Wright 20th overall.

“I think we wanted to draft those two guards but they went literally right before us back to back,” Nowitzki said. “(Justin) Anderson was on our board so we got somebody that we liked or really loved. Nowadays, you can never have enough shooters or athletes.”
