Disturbing new details revealed in killing of former Knicks draft pick
Basketball player Michael Wright was drugged and killed with an axe, prosecutors revealed Thursday, and said one of the two men charged with his murder lived with Wright and his two daughters and became their guardian after his death.
Wright, a former Arizona Wildcats standout and New York Knicks draft pick who played professionally overseas, was discovered dead in the back of his SUV in Brooklyn last year. Prosecutors claim Mark Holdbrooks and David Victor left his body there after killing him in the Closter, N.J., home he shared with Holdbrooks, a longtime friend. They have not revealed a motive for the murder.
William Nelson, who coached Wright when he played alongside Kevin Garnett at Chicago's Farragut Academy, told The Record newspaper that Holdbrooks attended a memorial service for Wright in Chicago in January on what would have been his 36th birthday.
"He talked about Michael as a loving father raising his kids," Nelson said. "He played the part."
