Draft lottery will impact Denver Nuggets' coaching search

If you're surprised that the Denver Nuggets haven't hired a head coach yet, don't be. For one, the season still isn't over, and some of the assistant coaches the Nuggets might want to interview, such as Alvin Gentry, are still with teams in the playoffs. Another reason, though, is because of the draft lottery. As Andrew Feinstein of Denver Stiffs says:

"If the Nuggets luck into picks one or two, and thus go big with Towns or Okafor, perhaps a coach better suited for big men makes sense - i.e. not D'Antoni. But if the Nuggets end up at three and go with the electric point guard in Russell (the consensus third overall selection as of today), perhaps D'Antoni is the right fit after all."

The Nuggets can't afford to wait much longer, though. If they hesitate, the coach they want, whether he's an assistant or a former head coach, could be swooped up by another, more attractive opportunity – such as the New Orleans Pelicans. Moreover, it's ideal to have a coach in place a few weeks before the draft so the entire team has an idea of direction and the types of players that coach wants. The results of the lottery should give the entire organization a better idea of who they should hire to lead this team back to the playoffs.
