Gregg Popovich is not above the selfie

Published Mar. 18, 2015 10:43 a.m. ET

Off the top of your head, try and think of something less realistic than Gregg Popovich agreeing to take a selfie. Don't worry if you can't, because nobody ever could. A Popovich selfie is the rarest of the rare. It's Hassan Whiteside riding a unicorn. It's a photograph of Bigfoot, 2Pac and Robert Durst playing Twister.

But two nights ago, one day before the San Antonio Spurs lost to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, one brave fan saw Popovich in the wild and asked if he'd take a selfie. Take it away, Reddit's skillzdan

Ran into Pop on 45th street in Midtown Manhattan last night. He was headed into a bar with who I presume was his wife. I was subject to the shortest most Pop interview ever. "Hey Pop can I get a selfie?!" "Yes." We followed him into the bar but he was in a semi-private area with a bunch of very decorated military men. On his way out a few of my friends snapped another pic with him and that was all she wrote. Tried coming up with some small talk to bulls--- with him about but... It's Pop. No small talk with that guy. He jokingly asked for $10 after the selfie and then laughed his way out of my life.

This is awesome for many reasons. Gregg Popovich, arguably the greatest basketball coach of all time, is just your average selfie-taking joe schmo. And, crazy as anything, he was nice about it!

What would've happened if Craig Sager, David Aldridge or a number of other sideline reporters posed the same question? Alas, we can dream.
