Joel Embiid Might Have to Pay Royalties to Nik Stauksas
Philadelphia 76ers center has dubbed himself “The Process” but he may not be able to do that without paying royalties to Nik Stauskas.
Nik Stauskas had his parents on his latest episode of The Sauce and Co. podcast, and they all reminisced about some of the journeys that brought Stauskas not only to the NBA, but to the Philadelphia 76ers.
One of the things Stauskas’ dad brought up was that Nik actually had a short documentary made by him called “Nik Stauskas: The Process.”
Joking a bit, Nik’s dad said that maybe Embiid is going to owe Nik some money over using that name.
“What your fans don’t know yet is ‘The Process’ has already been taken. That’s right. In 2013, there was a documentary made about Nik called ‘Nik Stauskas: The Process,’ so, if Embiid wants to continue using that, I’m afraid he’s going to have to pay a royalty.”
Nik thought it sounded quite alright. “If this does blow up, there may be some royalty fees he owes me,” he said.
Nik’s dad used some basic trademark reasoning to make his point.
“Well think about it. If you’re McDonalds, and you have the Big Mac, can you just let Joe’s Chicken Shack use the Big Mac? I don’t think so!”
“He’s got the cheddar, so he can pay up, I’m telling you,” his dad concluded.
I’m almost positive Nik and his parents were joking, however, Joel almost certainly will not owe them a thing. Looking at the current list of active trademarks out there, none of the Stauskas family members own “The Process.”
In fact, the person who applied to own “The Process” is none other than Joel Embiid himself.
So, hey, maybe Nik will end up owing Embiid some royalties if he doesn’t watch out.
