Knicks Rumors: New York Considering Contract Extension for Derrick Rose

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Derrick Rose of the New York Knicks is off to a good start this season. Will the Knicks be willing to give him an extension?

The decision for the New York Knicks to trade for Derrick Rose was one of the biggest trades of the offseason. So far, the Knicks have made out well on the trade, as both Rose and Justin Holiday have played well this season.

When the trade was made, many worried about the health of Rose. In Chicago, Rose had multiple knee surgeries, but you wouldn’t be able to tell by how he looks on the court this season.

In 17 games, Rose is averaging 32.6 minutes, 16.8 points, 4.9 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game. In the Knicks most recent game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Rose was able to have his first 30-point game with the Knicks in a matchup against Russell Westbrook.

Rose is playing for a new contract this offseason, but he is eligible for an extension similar to what Westbrook received. Due to how well he is playing, the Knicks could certainly entertain that idea.

“I haven’t talked to them about it,’’ Rose told The Post. “It’s been more about winning games. We’ll see. I’m more concerned with trying to win games, but it’s something I’d have to talk about with my family and team.’’

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks have yet to approach Rose about an extension. However, Berman also points out that the Knicks would be willing to if Rose continues to stay healthy.

There is some risk on both sides for the Knicks. According to Berman, the Knicks would be willing to pay more in the offseason to keep Rose to make sure that he can make it through the entire season.

Rose has certainly brought a spark to the Knicks this season. His explosive play from the point guard position has helped the Knicks get off to a good start this season. If Rose stays healthy, expect to see him with the Knicks for a few more years.
