Mark Jackson uses D'Angelo Russell scandal to rip a former Warriors assistant coach

Published Apr. 3, 2016 8:04 p.m. ET

Back in April of 2014 when Mark Jackson was wrapping up his third and final season as Warriors head coach, his lead assistant, Darren Erman, was fired by the team for a violation of company policy.

As it turned out, Erman was secretly recording conversations between players and coaches without their knowledge. And if that sounds familiar, it probably should.

One of the bigger stories in the NBA over the past week was Lakers rookie D'Angelo Russell getting busted for secretly recording teammate Nick Young a few months back. The video ended up getting leaked as it so often does, and it showed Young, who is engaged to rapper Iggy Azalea, appearing to discuss having flings with other young ladies.

Now back to Jackson, who appeared as part of the broadcast team on the call for Sunday's nationally-televised contest between the Thunder and the Rockets. As the group was discussing Russell and the Lakers, Jackson used the opportunity to rip Erman for what had happened almost two years ago.

"The good news for him," Jackson said of Russell, "is he very well one day could be an associate head coach in this league."

There were laughs all around, of course, because Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen knew exactly what had just taken place.

Jackson has maintained a desire to get back into the coaching ranks, but little digs like these wouldn't appear to be the best way of helping his overall cause.
