New York Knicks: An Update On Derrick Rose's Injury

New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose left early during the 114-103 victory over the Miami Heat. Find out the latest on Rose’s injury.


The New York Knicks entered the 2016-17 NBA regular season with the knowledge that Derrick Rose’s health could be an issue. He missed 16 games in 2015-16, 31 in 2014-15, 72 in 2013-14, 82 in 2012-13, and 27 in 2011-12.

During the 21st game of the 2016-17 NBA regular season, Rose suffered an injury.

The word injury is one that strikes fear into the hearts of NBA fans everywhere when Rose is the player being mentioned. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to be a severe injury, but instead something that he’ll need to simply approach in a responsible way.

According to the Knicks’ PR department, Rose was experiencing back spasms and was forced to miss the remainder of the Knicks’ win.

The good news is that, while Rose’s injury may be bothersome, it’s not career-threatening.

The back spasms are likely the result of Rose playing at the fastest pace he’s played since 2011-12. Almost five years removed from when he last played at an all-out pace and with this much explosiveness, Rose was all but destined to incur some issues.

Thus, this injury appears to be more of him going through the motions of truly getting back to 100 percent than it is something that will hinder him.

If it is something that will hurt Rose, then it could actually be helpful to his career.

Rose may have reached his limitations in terms of his physical approach to the game. If that proves to be the case, then he now knows what he’s physically capable of and can adjust his game accordingly.

Feasible as that all may be, it’s also possible that Rose could simply have tweaked something in his first 21 games of competitive basketball since missing five of a possible six preseason outings.
