New York Knicks Injury Update: Derrick Rose Gets MRI Results

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

New York Knicks starting point guard Derrick Rose received favorable results from the MRI on his back. He’ll travel with the team on the upcoming road trip.

The New York Knicks were lost without Derrick Rose against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The offensive rhythm was lost as the Knicks’ inability to create consistent penetration enabled the Cavaliers to limit offensive creativity and score in transition on the other end.

Following the Knicks’ 126-94 blowout loss to the defending NBA champions, Rose received the results from an MRI on his injured back.

Rose tweaked his back during the third quarter of the Knicks’ 114-103 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday, December 6. It was reported that Rose was suffering from back spasms, which forced him to miss the final quarter of play, as well as the game against Cleveland.

Thankfully for both Rose and the Knicks, the MRI revealed no structural damage in his back and he will travel with the Knicks on the upcoming five-game road trip.

That’s a promising sign and reason to breathe a massive sigh of relief.

Rose is currently averaging 16.7 points, 4.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 0.8 steals in 31.9 minutes per game. He’s shooting 45.0 percent from the field and 84.2 percent from the free throw line.

At No. 2 on the Knicks in assists per game and No. 3 in scoring, the 2011 NBA MVP has been one of New York’s most valuable players.

Rose has elevated his game in recent weeks to the point of playing at a star-caliber level. Over his past 10 appearances, he’s averaging 18.8 points and 4.9 assists on 45.8 percent shooting from the field.

That includes a 30-point performance against Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder and a 27-point performance against John Wall and the Washington Wizards.

Rose had scored at least 20 points in each of the two games prior to his injury. He was off to another hot start against Miami at the time of his injury.

The Knicks can only hope that he’ll be healthy and available sooner than later.

Thankfully, the MRI results were in his favor and he will travel with the team for the upcoming five-game road trip.
