New York Knicks: Maurice Ndour, Marshall Plumlee Assigned To D-League

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 3:05 p.m. ET

The New York Knicks have assigned Maurice Ndour and Marshall Plumlee to its NBA D-League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks.

One of the primary issues that teams run into when building a roster is finding minutes for every player in the rotation. Quality players are often forced to sit for extended periods of time when their teammates are performing at a higher level.

As the New York Knicks begin to craft their interior combinations, that’s left a pair of promising young big men as the odd men out.

Kristaps Porzingis and Joakim Noah are the starters at power forward and center, and Kyle O’Quinn and Willy Hernangomez have received big minutes as their backups. Carmelo Anthony and Lance Thomas have also spent time at the 4, which has left little time for others to play.

According to the Knicks’ PR department, big men Maurice Ndour and Marshall Plumlee have been assigned to the NBA D-League.

Both players should benefit from seeing an increase in playing time and an opportunity to hone their skills in Westchester.

Ndour has appeared in 13 of the Knicks’ 27 games, averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 7.6 minutes. Plumlee has played in three of New York’s 27 games, recording averages of 1.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in 9.0 minutes.

Both players are revered for their energy and physicality off the bench, but neither has been able to find consistent playing time.

Ndour and Plumlee were assigned to the NBA D-League on separate occasions in November, as well. The purpose of the assignment was for the duo to practice with Westchester and gain valuable minutes as featured players.

Those opportunities may not come along with the main roster in 2016-17, which is why a stint in Westchester can be so important for maintaining confidence and preparedness.

This is less of a demotion and more of an opportunity, which is how the Knicks need Ndour and Plumlee to view the assignment to the D-League.
