Phoenix Suns Unexpectedly Release Archie Goodwin

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Part of the massive Kentucky Wildcat contingency on the Phoenix Suns roster, Archie Goodwin, has been released from the Suns and will become a free agent.

As first reported by Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports’ The Vertical, while still only 22 years old, Archie had made very little headway in climbing up the Phoenix Suns‘ depth chart.

He did however start in 13 games last season following season ending injuries to Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight.

Shams further reported that the Phoenix Suns had been in talks with other teams in an attempt to move him before the beginning of the season. Goodwin had been a top candidate for trade this season.

A player with highlight reel potential, Goodwin has been a spark plug off the bench for the Suns since being drafted 29th overall in 2013. His career highlight for the Suns was a game winning three over Thabo Sefolosha against the Atlanta Hawks on January 23 of last season.

Set to make only $2 million this season, Goodwin has also been known as a player with high upside. Athletic ability aside, he is a scorer who at 6’5″ has the size to potentially dominate when his game finally matures. Yet career averages of 6.2 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 14.5 minutes per game, are hindered by an inconsistent 42% field goal percentage and 69% free throw percentage.

With Goodwin no longer on the roster, additional minutes will certainly fall to veteran Leandro Barbosa and rookie Tyler Ulis.

The Suns roster is now set at 15 as they head into the regular season opener against the Sacramento Kings at home on Wednesday night.
