Quad injury will force Blake Griffin to miss Rio Olympics

Published May. 6, 2016 6:21 p.m. ET

Blake Griffin officially has been ruled out of participating in USA Basketball training camp this summer, the Clippers announced on Friday via official release. This also means he won't be playing in the Rio Olympics.

"Griffin underwent a bone marrow procedure on his left quad tendon on April 27 and has already begun the rehabilitation process with the expectation that he will be ready for the start of the 2016-17 NBA season," the team said in a statement.

Griffin missed 41 games this season with a quad injury that he originally suffered on Dec. 25, 2015. He returned for five regular season contests before aggravating the injury in Game 4 of L.A.'s loss to the Blazers in the first round of the playoffs.

USA Basketball has a list of 31 finalists that it creates specifically for situations just like these. Chris Paul, who suffered a broken hand in that very same Game 4, previously withdrew his name from being considered for the Olympic roster.

It's the second straight time Griffin has been sidelined for the Olympics. He made the Olympic team in 2012 but was forced to withdraw after an injury in an exhibition game.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
