Rajon Rondo picks up strangest technical foul of the year

Published Mar. 1, 2016 11:44 a.m. ET

Sacramento Kings point guard Rajon Rondo is a mercurial guy whose edgy, often grating, personality tends to get him in trouble -- be it with coaches, teammates or, notoriously, referees.

During Monday night's loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Rondo did something only he would do. No, he didn't glide his way towards a triple-double (although he did finish one rebound shy). Instead, he miraculously picked up two delay of game penalties on the very same play:

Sacramento's announcers were as befuddled in real time as you probably are right now. What is even happening here? Why didn't Rondo take the ball from the referee, inbound it like a normal person, save his team the technical free throws and just go to halftime?

Unfortunately, it looks like we'll never get a good answer:

Kevin Durant and the Thunder could not care less about why Rondo did what he did, only that he did it:

Rondo is an unrestricted free agent this summer, and sequences like this -- along with an irreparably damaged three-point shot -- will limit the number of suitors who'll be after him. There's a good chance it won't matter, though, because the Kings probably love the fact that he makes DeMarcus Cousins happy and leads the league in assists. (Rondo's 12.0 assists per game are a career high.)

He only needs one team to pay him a ton of money. Expect the Kings to be that team, even though they should know better than anyone else how frustrating he can be.
