The Brooklyn Nets’ eighth win of the 2016-17 NBA season came in dramatic fashion thanks to Randy Foye’s game-winning three-pointer.
It’s been a rough going for the Brooklyn Nets in 2016-17. They have no hope of sniffing the postseason, they have no incentive to tank since the Boston Celtics can swap first round draft picks with them, and they have little hope of getting better through trades or free agency.
That being said, there have been some moments of happiness for the Nets, who own the league’s second-worst record at 8-22. Their eighth win came in dramatic fashion Monday night, with 10-year veteran Randy Foye supplying the finishing touch.
In a post-Christmas matchup with the Charlotte Hornets, Brooklyn trailed by three points with 2.3 seconds remaining. Foye got freed up on a screen, caught the ball near the top of the key, took a dribble past his defender, and drilled the lean-in three-pointer over Kemba Walker just before the buzzer:
Foye’s game-winner helped the Nets overcome a 14-point third quarter deficit, dropping the Hornets to 17-14 on the season.
Brooklyn also overcame the loss of Jeremy Lin, who left the game in the third quarter with a hamstring injury — the same hamstring injury that’s sidelined him for 17 games so far this season.
In any case, Foye was able to provide Nets fans with a temporary distraction from the latest disruption to Linsanity. That basket was Foye’s only made field goal of the game, as he finished with three points on 1-of-2 shooting in 21 minutes off the bench.
Bojan Bogdanovic led Brooklyn with 26 points off the bench. Sean Kilpatrick had 23, Brook Lopez finished with 21 and Lin added 17 in his 22 minutes before going down with the injury.
No one should be mistaking the Nets for a playoff team anytime soon, but their latest win over a playoff-caliber team provided plenty of Brooklyn fans with a late Christmas gift nevertheless.
