Report: Hawks expect to part ways with GM Danny Ferry

Before the Atlanta Hawks had the best season in franchise history, things were very much up in the air in Atlanta. The racially charged comments from general manager Danny Ferry last offseason regarding Miami Heat small forward Luol Deng were all that mattered in the early part of the season, before the clouds of scandal gave way to a season of fantastic basketball.

With new ownership on the way in Atlanta, the question of whether Ferry would be back next season has been in the back of the minds of Hawks observers for some time. Now, according to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, we may have our answer on Ferry's status. As Jeff Schultz writes:

"There has been a belief within the Hawks’ organization for several months that the team’s general manager is not going to be brought back. The thinking is that coach Mike Budenholzer (expected to get a new contract with a raise and more autonomy) and assistant general manager Wes Wilcox likely will be at the top of the basketball operations department, at least for the next year."

Budenholzer was the nominal head of basketball operations this season in Ferry's leave of absence, but Wilcox is known to many people behind-the-scenes in Atlanta as one of the bright minds behind the Hawks' ascent. While Ferry's basketball acumen will be missed, the Hawks would be in good hands moving forward with Wilcox and Budenholzer.
