Report: Kings coach George Karl will undergo throat cancer procedure
Sacramento Kings coach George Karl, a two-time cancer survivor, will miss practice Thursday to undergo “a procedure for cancer in my throat,” according to the Sacramento Bee.
Karl, 64, told the Bee after Wednesday’s 120-111 loss to the Cavaliers that the procedure was not serious. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005 and with neck and throat cancer in 2010.
Karl is fifth on the NBA’s career coaching wins list at 1,167, which ranks him first among active coaches. His job security has been in question this season with the Kings at 25-38 and 6.5 games out of the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Kings general manager Vlade Divac told the Bee that he wants to be patient with the health of his coach.
“Coach told me the other day. I told him to take as much time as he needs. … We probably won’t know the results for a couple days. He doesn’t know how long (the procedure is) going to take, whether it’s one hour, two hours, three hours. We have practice, and I told him, ‘I’ll be there. You have to just do your thing, and if you need more time, don’t worry about it, I’ll take care of it.’ ”
