Sacramento Kings trade rumors involving Rudy Gay

Published Jan. 17, 2016 6:15 p.m. ET

Trade rumors regarding Sacramento Kings forward, Rudy Gay, have continued to circulate. Recent teams involved in this trade talk include Chicago and the Los Angeles Clippers. The freshest one to surface involves the New Orleans Pelicans.

With the trade deadline just a month away, general managers are undeniably active. Teams on the cusp of a playoff run could be searching for an acquisition to aid their push. With Sacramento just one game out of the eighth seed, (trailing Utah, whom they beat on Thursday with an end-of-regulation, game-winning shot by Gay) a fruitful move makes sense.

New Orleans included shooting guard Eric Gordon and small forward Alonzo Gee in a trade offer which Sacramento reportedly turned down. The more recent rumor came about from a supposed discussion regarding New Orleans forward, Ryan Anderson, according to Michael Scotty of Sheridan Hoops, which was turned down by New Orleans.

Last year, Gay signed a three-year $40 million extension. Though a large contributor, he has struggled adapting to the system of head coach George Karl. Currently he is playing more power forward than ever before and his scoring has dropped to 18 PPG—down from his career high 21.1 last year.

The addition of Anderson—who becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season—and his ability to play both forward positions, could potentially provide substantial room for Rajon Rondo to navigate the floor and, in theory, allow DeMarcus Cousins to secure the post.

An argument for Gay—a player just last year regarded as favored by principal owner Vivek Ranadive—being expendable could be made. Though, action between New Orleans and Sacramento is not expected in the near future, as the move for Anderson seems to be the only one which behooves Sacramento, and with New Orleans likely wishing to hold out for a larger trade.
