Spurs, Kings make coaching history Monday night

Published Nov. 9, 2015 11:44 p.m. ET

There was a lot going on Monday night as the Sacramento Kings hosted the San Antonio Spurs. Kawhi Leonard continued his growth as San Antonio's No. 1 offensive option. DeMarcus Cousins returned from a sore Achilles to battle Tim Duncan and LaMarcus Aldridge. And Marco Belinelli, now with the Kings, faced the team with which he won a ring in 2014.

But the game was bigger than any of that, thanks to the presence of two individuals on the respective benches. Becky Hammon is in her second season as an assistant coach for the Spurs, and Nancy Lieberman joined the Kings' coaching staff this offseason. According to the Sacramento broadcast on Monday night, it was the first game in NBA history to feature two teams who employ female assistant coaches.

There doesn't need to be much more said than that, because frankly, these are two brilliant basketball minds who are so much more than a milestone. But it was a pretty cool note.
