Three questions the Kings face heading into training camp
With training camp about to tip off, here’s what to watch for as your favorite team prepares for the 2015-16 season. Some of these questions will be answered quickly; others could linger into the regular season. Either way, here are three things that will define the first month of this new season:
How much will Rajon Rondo show up the doubters?
Let’s face it -- the expectations for Rondo are so low with the Sacramento Kings that he almost can’t help but exceed them. But just how high can he float this boat with his rising tide? A union with DeMarcus Cousins could be fruitful for both parties, but the team will need 3-point shooting around the duo. And if they’re on the floor with Willie Cauley-Stein, the spacing will be especially cramped. But there’s nowhere to go but up for Rondo and the Kings.
Does it matter if George Karl and Boogie get along?
It’d be nice if your coach and franchise superstar were on the same page, of course. But as long as the two parties can agree to disagree and work toward the common good, it’s not necessary for them to be best friends. Plenty of teams have succeeded with coaches that didn’t get along with their stars, and Karl has the motivation of moving up the all-time wins list for coaches. He’ll do what it takes to get the Kings back on the winning track -- and that means making the most of Cousins.
Can this Sacramento experiment work?
There’s a lot going on with the Kings, and some of it is bound to blow up. Perhaps most interesting is the situation in the front office, where Vlade Divac is now officially the general manager and Peja Stojakovic has taken on a bigger personnel role. Sacramento’s been anything but stable to this point. Will taking an outside-the-box approach fix that?
