Mike Woodson is currently an assistant coach with the Clippers, but he's had the job as a team's head coach more than once. He's now in his 20th season as an NBA coach, and has a reputation of being someone his players have always liked.
Perhaps this bit of background can help explain why he chose to punch one of his current players in the face.
Woodson was giving DeAndre Jordan a sideline pep talk, which concluded with him smacking Jordan in the jaw with a closed fist.

The punch wasn't thrown hard enough to do any real damage, but it might have been enough to wake DJ up. Jordan finished with 18 rebounds and three blocked shots in a 21-point victory that put the Clippers up 2-0 in their playoff series against the Blazers.
