The Philadelphia 76ers selected Ben Simmons from LSU with the first pick in the 2016 NBA draft.

Simmons averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists and was a consensus first-team All-American in his lone year at LSU.

Simmons joined Shaquille O'Neal (1992) as the only other Tiger to be taken No. 1 in the NBA draft. He was also just the third freshman in LSU history to be drafted, along with Tyrus Thomas (No. 4 in 2006) and Anthony Randolph (No. 14 in 2008).

The 2016 draft also marked the seventh straight year a freshman was taken No. 1.

During the NBA Summer League, Simmons showed flashes of his passing ability and court vision, but was unable to take the court for a single regular season game. Simmons suffered a Jones fracture in his foot in October, but is expected to be back for the Sixers in 2017.

After Philadelphia's selection of Simmons, the Los Angeles Lakers took Duke small forward Brandon Ingram No. 2 and the Boston Celtics picked California small forward Jaylen Brown at No. 3. This was the third straight year, and fourth in the last five, the top three picks were all one-and-dones.
